TIMELINE OF THE BOOKS OF SAMUEL, KINGS & CHRONICLES 1107 1011 971 931 853 722 586 1 Samuel 2 Samuel 1 Kings 1 Kings 2 Kings 31 1-4 5-10 11-20 21-24 1-11 12-22 1-17 18-25 1 Chronicles 10 1Chr 11-19 1Chr 20-29 2 Chronicles 1-9 2 Chronicles 10-20 2 Chronicles 21-36 Legend: B.C. dates at top of timeline are approximate. Note that 931 BC marks the division of the Kingdom into Southern Tribes (Judah and Benjamin) and Ten Northern Tribes. To avoid confusion be aware that after the division of the Kingdom in 931 BC, the Southern Kingdom is most often designated in Scripture as "Judah" and the Northern Kingdom as "Israel." Finally, note that 1 Chronicles 1-9 is not identified on the timeline because these chapters are records of genealogy. THE DOWNWARD SPIRAL Comparison of 1 Samuel thru 2 Chronicles FIRST CHRONICLES SUMMARY CHART 1 Chronicles 1-9:44 1 Chronicles 10:1-39:30 Royal Line of David Reign of David 12 Tribes of David's Reign Highlights of David's Reign Genealogies History Ancestry Activity 1000's of Years Circa 33 Years As you read 1-2 Chronicles keep in mind several points - 1-2 Chronicles was originally one book written about 450-430 BC, after the Jews had returned from their 70 year exile in Babylon to their Land. Ezra has traditionally been assumed to be the author but there is no corroborating Scripture to be definitive. As seen in the summary table above, the first 9 chapters of 1 Chronicles are genealogy going back to Adam. Then beginning in 1 Chronicles 10-29 the focus shifts to David's reign (Saul is mentioned in 1Ch 10+ mentioning only his death is to prepare the reader for David's succession!). First Chronicles mirrors many passages in 2 Samuel and 1 Kings, but omits events like David's sin with Bathsheba, choosing instead to "accentuate the positive." MacArthur (Intro 1 Chronicles) explains that "The chronicler's selective genealogy and history of Israel, stretching from Adam (1Ch 1:1) to the return from Babylon (2Ch 26:23), was intended to remind the Jews of God's promises and intentions about: 1) the Land; 2) the nation; 3) the Davidic king; 4) the Levitical priests; 5) the temple; and 6) true worship, none of which had been abrogated because of the Babylonian captivity. All of this was to remind them of their spiritual heritage during the difficult times they faced, and to encourage them to be faithful to God....Over 55% of the material in Chronicles is unique, i.e., not found in 2 Samuel or 1 and 2 Kings....These two books were written to the repatriated Jewish exiles as a chronicle of God's intention of future blessing, in spite of the nation's past moral/spiritual failure for which the people paid dearly under God's wrath." Swindoll has a similar note writing that "the books of Chronicles, written after the time of the exile, focus on those elements of history that God wanted the returning Jews to meditate upon: obedience that results in God’s blessing, the priority of the temple and priesthood, and the unconditional promises to the house of David.....When the book was written, David’s descendants no longer ruled as monarchs over Israel. But the chronicler desired the people to remember the royal Davidic lineage, for God had promised a future ruler would rise from that line." Eugene Merrill (borrow BKC) states it this way "The purpose of 1 and 2 Chronicles is to show God's elective and preserving grace in His covenant people (ISRAEL) through David, the messianic king and priest.....1 and 2 Chronicles...show that the gracious God of all the earth and all the ages has a better plan by which He will achieve redemptive reconciliation. That plan does not do away with David; on the contrary, it eventuates in a greater "David" (the Messiah) who is both King and Priest. The chronicler's emphasis on David, the priesthood, and the temple would have been a source of great encouragement to post-exilic Judah. The nation had fallen into captivity, a comparatively small remnant had returned, and the restored Temple was meager compared with its former splendor (cf. Hag 2:3). But God's promises will not fail. In His time the Temple will be filled with His own glory. And the Davidic line once more will be established and the Messiah will rule on David's throne in the kingdom....This assurance would have instilled fervent joy and anticipation in the hearts of the remnant of God's people (RETURNING FROM EXILE) who otherwise saw all about them only a vague reminiscence of the glory their fathers had known in former years." Here is John MacArthur's Outline of First Chronicles I Selective Genealogy (1Ch 1:1-9:34) Adam to Before David (1Ch 1:1-2:55) David to the Captivity (1Ch 3:1-24) Twelve Tribes (1Ch 4:1-9:1) Jerusalem Dwellers (1Ch 9:2-34) II David's Ascent (1Ch 9:35-12:40) Saul's Heritage and Death (1Ch 9:35-10:14) David's Anointing (1Ch 11:1-3) Jerusalem's Conquest (1Ch 11:4-9) David's Men (1Ch 11:10-12:40) III David's Reign (1Ch 13:1-29:30) The Ark of the Covenant (1Ch 13:1-16:43) The Davidic Covenant (1Ch 17:1-27) Selected Military History (1Ch 18:1-21:30) Temple-Building Preparations (1Ch 22:1-29:20) Transition to Solomon (1Ch 29:21-30) 1 Chronicles 17:1 And it came about, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the Ark of the covenant of the LORD is under curtains." Do all: 1Ch 22:7 28:2 Jos 9:14 1Sa 16:7 Ps 20:4 1Co 13:9 for God: 1Sa 10:7 2Sa 7:3 Zec 8:23 Lu 1:28 Related Passage: 2 Samuel 7:2+ that the king said to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the Ark of God dwells within tent curtains." THE PROPHET MISPEAKS! Then Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you." - Nathan is convinced this is the reasonable response, and is convinced God is with David. God is with David, but this is not His will for David as we soon see. 1 Chronicles 17:3 It came about the same night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, word: Nu 12:6 2Ki 20:1-5 Isa 30:21 Am 3:7 Related Passage: 2 Samuel 7:4 But in the same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, Numbers 12:6+ He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, shall make Myself known to him in a vision. I shall speak with him in a dream. Amos 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets. In the title of Psalm 18:1+ David though by this time is likely a king makes no mention of his royal title but gives his better title identifying himself as Yahweh's servant so that we read For the choir director. A Psalm of David the servant of the LORD, who spoke to the LORD the words of this song in the day that the LORD delivered him from the hand of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. And he said, “I love You, O LORD, my strength.” NET Note - The title “my servant” or “servant of the LORD” is reserved in the Bible for distinguished personages, people who are truly spiritual leaders, like Moses, David, Hezekiah, and also the Messiah. THOUGHT - My servant is a beautiful description and should be the one all of God's children strive for and desire to hear from Jehovah. May God's Spirit so work in all of our lives that we might all one day hear from our Master's lips, those precious words "Well done good and faithful slave (doulos servant), I will put you in charge of many things, enter into the joy of your master." (Mt 25:23) In Jesus' Name. Amen. God is looking for faithfulness in His servants and He will take care of their fruitfulness and their future commendation.
