Note that 931BC marks the division of the Kingdom into Southern Tribes (Judah and Benjamin) and Ten Northern Tribes. To avoid confusion be aware that after the division of the Kingdom in 931BC, the Southern Kingdom is most often designated in Scripture as "Judah" and the Northern Kingdom as "Israel." Finally, note that 1 Chronicles 1-9 is not identified on the timeline because these chapters are records of genealogy. Withdraw from me; whatever you impose on me I will bear.” So the king of Assyria required of Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. 15 Hezekiah gave him all the silver which was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasuries of the king’s house. 16 At that time Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the doorposts which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria. Isaiah 36:1-2 Now in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them. NOTE: While 2 Chronicles 32 does parallel some of the passages on Hezekiah's life recorded in 2 Kings 18 (last half beginning at 2Ki 18:13), 2 Kings 19 and 2 Kings 20 (and the parallel accounts in Isaiah 36-39), the Chronicles record has many passages that give additional information not found in the Kings or Isaiah accounts. The passages in Isaiah parallel the Kings passages almost word for word with the only significant additional information in Isaiah 38:9-20, describing Hezekiah's "song" or "psalm" after his recovery. For a chart comparing these chapters see Harmony of 2 Kings 18-20, Isaiah 36-39 and 2 Chronicles 32 Here are the major additions of Information not in 2Ki 18-20 or Isa 36-39: HEZEKIAH ENHANCES JERUSALEM'S DEFENSES 2 Chronicles 32:2-8 SOME OF THE ASSYRIAN'S BLASPHEMY - 2 Chronicles 32:15-19 (there is some overlap) HEZEKIAH AND ISAIAH PRAYING - 2 Chronicles 32:20 SOME OF THE INFORMATION IN 2 Chronicles 32:22-23 HEZEKIAH'S PRIDE AND HUMBLING HIMSELF 2 Chronicles 32:25-26 HEZEKIAH'S WEALTH AND PROSPERING - 2 Chronicles 32:27-30 HEZEKIAH'S "BABYLONIAN" TEST - 2 Chronicles 32:31 HEZEKIAH'S DEEDS OF DEVOTION (hesed) - 2 Chronicles 32:31 HEZEKIAH'S BURIAL IN THE UPPER SECTION OF TOMBS OF DAVID - 2 Chronicles 32:33 Source: Halley's Bible handbook BORROW (See also Jerusalem in Time of Hezekiah) FAITHFULNESS IS NO GUARANTEE ONE WILL HAVE NO ADVERSITY After these acts of faithfulness ('emeth; LXX - aletheia - truthfulness, uprightness, fidelity) - Faithfulness ('emeth; LXX - aletheia) is not merely correct speech but faithful, sincere, inward reality before God. The Lord delights in truth in the heart, and genuine service to Him requires integrity without hypocrisy, whether seen by others or known only to God. To what acts of faithfulness does the chronicler refer? Temple Cleansing & Restoration in 2 Chronicles 29:1-36, National Covenant Renewal & Passover Revival- 2 Chronicles 30:1-27; Destruction of Idolatry 2 Chronicles 31:1; reorganization & Support of the Priesthood 2 Chronicles 31:2–21 (cf also 2Ki 18:1-8+ for Hezekiah's faithfulness). The Chronicler intentionally places Assyrian invasion after obedience, not after failure, to teach a theological lesson. Faithfulness did not prevent the crisis. Faithfulness preceded the crisis. This guards against a shallow “obedience = immediate ease” theology. Obedience does not exempt God’s people from trials. Faithfulness often prepares God’s people for trials. The invasion becomes a test, not a punishment. This aligns with later biblical theology (cf. John 16:33; 1 Peter 4:12). However in 2Ki 18:13-16 Hezekiah was attacked by Sennacherib and initially he agrees to pay the Assyrian tribute (even tearing gold out of the Temple to pay the tribute), but that just whetted the Assyrian's appetite for conquest of Jerusalem.
