So Cain became very angry and his countenance fell. 6 Then the LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? 7 “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” 8 (CAIN REFUSED TO MASTER IT!) And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came about when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him. Romans 7:23+ but I see a different law (NOT MOSAIC BUT A PRINCIPLE) in the members of my body (FALLEN FLESH), (present tense - continually) waging war (antistrateuomai - present tense - continually) against the law of my mind (REGENERATED MIND), and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. Galatians 5:16-17+ But I say, walk (present imperative see our need to depend on the Holy Spirit to obey) by the Spirit, and you will not (STRONG DOUBLE NEGATIVE - OU ME - ABSOLUTELY NOT) carry out the desire (epithumia) of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire (epithumeo - present tense - continually) against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition (antikeimai - present tense - continually) to one another, so that (TERM PURPOSE/RESULT) you may not do the things that you please. Romans 6:12-13+ Therefore (BECAUSE OF Ro 6:11+) do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its lusts, 13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God. Colossians 3:5+ Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. Galatians 5:14-15+ For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, “YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.” 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care (present imperative see our need to depend on the Holy Spirit to obey) that you are not consumed by one another. 2 Corinthians 10:3+ For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war (strateuomai) according to the flesh, 2 Timothy 2:23+ But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels (mache). THE CONDITION & CAUSE OF SELFISH STRIFE This is the opposite of Tolstoy's great novel "War and Peace," for here James moves from peace to war! What a contrast between James 3:18+ and James 4:1 (which is probably not the best chapter break - see technical note) - "fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace" is now "quarrels and conflicts"! A veritable antithesis! James has just described the glorious nature and fruit of wisdom from above and now abruptly transitions to a less than glorious picture of the spirit that was present in the churches in the diaspora. This is a problem that takes place inside the church, between believers. Wars and conflicts were occuring among the dispersed Christians. James begins this section like a doctor because he is aware that the external signs are only symptoms of a deeper issue. And by asking questions, he quickly diagnoses the heart of the problem which is their heart (which is the problem of ALL of our hearts)! The doctor must first make the correct diagnosis to offer the correct cure. And remember he is speaking to believers and so these problems are clearly rearing their ugly head in the churches dispersed abroad (James 1:1+) and he wants to help them understand how a person grows up to a mature relationship in Christ. African Study Bible introduces this section - James has addressed several problems among the Jewish Christians scattered around the world, including discrimination in the church (Jas 2:1-12) and wrong use of the tongue (Jas 3:1-18). Now he turns to the fights and quarrels among you (Jas 4:1). Refusal to listen and failure to obey the word are at the root of these conflicts and other sins. Albert
