Lucas 12

MacDonald writes "The reward probably has to do with governmental rule with Christ during the Millennium (1 Pet. 5:1-4)." I tend to agree with MacDonald for the apostle John writes in Revelation 5:10 "You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.” (See Tony Garland's comments on our reigning on earth)

Lucas 12

MacDonald - The servant professes to be working for Christ, but actually he is an unbeliever. Instead of feeding the people of God, he abuses them, robs them, and lives in self-indulgence. (This may be a reference to the Pharisees.) (See Believer's Bible Commentary) John

Lucas 12

MacDonald - Verses 47 and 48 set forth a fundamental principle in regard to all service. The principle is that the greater the privilege, the greater the responsibility. (Believer's Bible Commentary - borrow.)

Lucas 12

MacDonald - Although afflictions and dissensions broke out during His earthly ministry, it was not until the cross that the heart of man was truly exposed. The Lord knew that all of this must take place, and He was willing that the fire of persecution should burst forth as soon as necessary against Himself. (Believer's Bible Commentary - borrow.) John

Lucas 12

MacDonald - It is a curious mark of man's perverted nature that ungodly relatives would often rather have their son a drunkard and dissolute person than have him take a public stand as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ! This paragraph disproves the theory that Jesus came to unite all humanity (godly and ungodly) into a single "universal brotherhood of man." Rather, He divided them as they have never been divided before! (Believer's Bible Commentary - borrow) Divided (1266) diamerizo means to divide, part, share, separate. Friberg - (1) divide, separate; passive be separated off, be dispersed (Acts 2.3); (2) distribute, divide up, share (Lk 22.17); middle divide up among (Mt 27.35); (3) figuratively and passive be divided against, be opposed to (Lk 11.17) (Borrow Analytical Lexicon of the Greek New Testament) Diamerizo - 13x in NT - distributing(1), divided(4), divided...among(1), divided up...among themselves(2), dividing up...among(1), share(1), sharing(1). Matt. 12:25; Matt. 12:26; Mk. 3:24; Mk. 3:25; Mk. 3:26; Mk. 6:41; Lk. 12:13; Rom. 12:3; 1 Co. 1:13; 1 Co. 7:17; 1 Co. 7:34; 2 Co. 10:13; Heb. 7:2 Luke 12:54 And He was also saying to the crowds, "When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, 'A shower is coming,' and so it turns out. KJV Luke 12:54 And he said also to the people, When ye see a cloud rise out of the west, straightway ye say, There cometh a shower; and so it is. When you see a cloud rising in the west 1 Ki 18:44,45; Mt 16:1-4 Luke 12 Resources - Multiple Sermons and Commentaries Luke 12:49-59 The Divisive Jesus - Steven Cole Luke 12:54-59 The Failure to Discern the Times and the Threat - John MacArthur Related Passage: Matthew 16:1-4 The Pharisees and Sadducees came up, and testing Jesus, they asked Him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 But He replied to them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 “And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Do you know how to discern the appearance of the sky, but cannot discern the signs of the times? 4 “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah.” And He left them and went away. (See John MacArthur's sermon Dealing with Spiritual Blindness - Part 1 - Mt 16:1-4) SIGNS OF THE TIMES: CLOUDS IN THE WEST John MacArthur sets the context for this last section in Luke 12 explaining that Jesus' previous discourse has been "very evangelistic up to this point, calling people to come to faith in Him, to receive the salvation that He offers and that's why He's speaking to those who were still in the process of coming to that conclusion. But here in Lk 12:54, He opens it up to the crowd and it stops being an invitation because they've already made up their mind and it becomes an indictment. It becomes a warning directed at them in their unbelief and from here on to the end of this discourse, Lk 13:9; all of it has that same tone of indictment and judgment to fall. Essentially, up to Lk 12:54, He is inviting Jews to believe. Here, He begins condemning unbelieving Jews and we can extend it beyond that because the Bible is intended for all generations. Up to this point, He has been inviting people to believe and now He condemns those who do not." (The Failure to Discern the Times and the Threat) And so in this last section Jesus gives a stern warning to those who can discern natural signs but refuse to discern spiritual signs and as a result will miss the opportunity of a lifetime (like Judas Iscariot cf Mt 26:24, 27:3-5)! The world understands this for they even use the saying in commercials saying "Grab for all the gusto you can, because you only go around once!" Paul alludes to this "once in a lifetime" aspect And working together with Him, we also urge you not to receive the grace of God in vain (IMPLICATION? YOU CAN RECEIVE IT "IN VAIN" - ESV Study note "Those who turn back from Christ show that their initial, apparent reception of God’s grace was not real but in vain.") – 2 for He says, “AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU, AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU.” Behold (MEANS "PAY ATTENTION!"), now is “THE ACCEPTABLE TIME,” behold (PAUL USES IT AGAIN TO STRESS THE IMPORT OF HEARING AND HEEDING THESE WORDS!), now is “THE DAY OF SALVATION” (2 Cor 6:1-2+)
