Morris - David already knew that he would some day "go to be with" his dead son (2 Samuel 12:23). Now God also told him he would "go to be with thy fathers." The souls of both patriarchs and deceased infants are safe in heaven. Believer's Study Bible - This is a repetition of the Davidic covenant (1Chr 11-15; cf. Ge 9:13; 2Sa 7:12-17) and of David's psalm of thanksgiving (1 Chr 17:16-27; cf. 2 Sam. 7:18-29). The dynasty of Saul had come to an end (cf. 2 Sam. 7:15), but David's was to abide forever. In the immediate future, David's seed, i.e., Solomon, would construct the temple (vv. 11, 12); in the distant future, David's Seed, i.e., Jesus Christ, would join His divine nature (v. 13) to David's human ancestry and establish the earthly kingdom of God forever (v. 14). Even during the Babylonian exile, the Davidic dynasty would be perpetuated when Jehoiachin was released from prison by Evil-Merodach (562 B.C.), honored, and elevated to a status above that of other captive kings (cf. 2 Kin. 25:27-30; Jer. 52:31-34). Zerubbabel, a Davidic descendant, would be released in the days of Cyrus, king of Persia, to accompany exiles from Babylon to Jerusalem and to act as governor. 1 Chronicles 17:12 "He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.
