Wiersbe - The twenty-four families (clans) of priests were assigned by lot to serve in the sanctuary at scheduled times and the rest of the time would be in the priestly cities instructing the people. One might ask why were fewer descendants from Ithamar? This would seem to reflection the judgment by God on the house of Eli who was in the line of Ithamar (1Sa 2:27-36).
