Note that 931BC marks the division of the Kingdom into Southern Tribes (Judah and Benjamin) and Ten Northern Tribes. To avoid confusion be aware that after the division of the Kingdom in 931BC, the Southern Kingdom is most often designated in Scripture as "Judah" and the Northern Kingdom as "Israel." Finally, note that 1 Chronicles 1-9 is not identified on the timeline because these chapters are records of genealogy. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father. 31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah. 32 He did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done. 33 Pharaoh Neco imprisoned him at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem; and he imposed on the land a fine of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold (MADE HIM A VASSAL KING). 34 Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the place of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz away and brought him to Egypt, and he died there. Jeremiah 22:11 For thus says the LORD in regard to Shallum (JEHOAHAZ). the son of Josiah, king of Judah, who became king in the place of Josiah his father, who went forth from this place, “He will never return there; 12 but in the place where they led him captive, there he will die and not see this land again. The people of the land took Joahaz the son of Josiah, and made him king in place of his father in Jerusalem - 2Ki 23:30+ adds that they "anointed" him. He may have been the people's choice but he was not Pharaoh Neco's choice and Neco now effectively held the reins of power in Judah. According to 1Ch 3:15 Johanan was the firstborn and theoretically heir to the throne, but he was not the "popular" choice! Joahaz's full name, is "Jehoahaz" (2Ki 23:31+). Once again we see an evil offspring from Josiah (2Ki 23:32+) one of the godliest kings in Israel history! Lineage does not guarantee coronation! Bob Utley on the people of the land - This phrase has different meanings in different parts of the OT. (1) local non-Israelite people ‒ Gen. 23:7,12,13; Ezra 9:1,11; 10:2,11, (2) poor farmers or herdsmen ‒ 2 Kgs. 24:14; 25:12, (3) land owners and leaders ‒ 2 Kgs. 11:14,18,19,20; 21:24; 23:30,35; 2 Chr. 23:20-21; 26:21; 33:25; 36:1; Jer. 1:18; 34:19; 37:2; 44:2 "anointed him" AB, p. 291, makes an interesting comment that only a few kings were Anointed (2Ki 23:30+) in 1 and 2 Kings. All of them were not the "expected" choice (i.e., oldest son). Solomon ‒ 1 Kgs. 1:45 Jehoash ‒ 2 Kgs. 11:12 Jehoahaz ‒ here Mark Boda has an interesting comment that "For the Chronicler, Josiah’s death signaled the end of the independent kingdom of Judah. From this point on in the Chronicler’s account, foreign emperors (Neco, Nebuchadnezzar, Cyrus) will act and speak for Yahweh, often closely linked with prophetic figures (36:12–13, 15–21, 22–23)."
